That is Sutton Bay Golf along the Missouri River in central South Dakota. It’s also the place where I rode my horse and herded cattle, growing up on the Matt Sutton ranch (yep, my dad)! It’s part of the 120+ year old Sutton Ranches and our 5000 acres turned into a world class private golf course under the guidance of pro golfer Graham Marsh, landscape architect Bill Kubly, golf expert Mark Amundson and Landscapes Unlimited. It was my Dad’s dream that his successful and beautiful Missouri River land would turn into a golf course when he retired from ranching and that’s what happened! This gorgeous stretch of the wide Missouri was called Sutton Bay by the Corps of Engineers back in the 1970s. One day my mom answered our party line and it was someone asking how the fishing was down at “Sutton Bay”. She said, “Where?” We were evidently the last to know but are grateful that the Corps decided to name the recreation and boat dock area after my great grandfather, Edwin Sutton, a pioneer, entrepreneur and prairie developer who amassed 30,000+ acres of this magnificent Missouri River bottom land. It was home to buffalo, Sioux & Arikara Indians and hearty pioneers when he was settling land grants back in the 1880s. Edwin would be so proud of the outcome of his hard work and pioneer spirit!
